Jeep Wrangler Heavy Duty Eight-Speed Transmission In 2014

As of now Chrysler offers its eight-speed transmissions in the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger full-size sedans. In addition to these models, they also plan to add the eight-speed transmissions in to the 2014 Jeep Wrangler. Co-developed by German auto supplier ZF Group, are aimed at improving fuel economy. The eight-speed Jeep Wranglers are expected to offer more than 25% better fuel economy by 2014. Overall the company aims at the government’s Corporate Average Fuel Economy target of 35 miles per gallon by 2016. Most Jeepers are looking for a beefier transfer case with gear reduction. It will be interesting to see how Jeep plans on incorporating that with the demand for fuel economy. We talk to a hand full of Jeep enthusiast’s that believe the eight-speed transmission would be “blasphemy“. We’ll try to keep an open mind to the new changes with the 2014 Jeep Wrangler and hope to get a preview soon.

  1. I drive a 2006 LJ Rubicon with a 6 speed right now, and there have been times where, with the axle gearing another gear in the transmition might have been nice. If this is done right and maybe include a twin-stick transfer where low range is available in 2wd and the lockers are available with a by-pass for high range it could work nicely and get some good mpg too.

  2. My Mercedes-derived 5 speed in my 2012 Wrangler is excellent for me, especially with the 3.21 axle. These 8 speeds will be based on the reliable German ZF tranmissions so they should do well for the Wrangler like they have for other Chrysler products. I’d consider trading my Wrangler in early if I could get an 8 speed, though. I suspect this will be the last Wrangler that will be a real Wrangler. Rumor has it that the next one will be watered down to keep pedestrians safe and make more “aerodynamic”

  3. I’d like to see the Wranglers get a 6 Cyl turbo Diesel as mileage, torque, and performance would all be desired by most Wrangler owners.
I’d purchase an FC if it had a diesel, the 40″ers & Portals as promised!!!
I do believe mileage could be greatly improved if Wraners abandoned the tiny V 6cyl engine that is working way hard that causes mileage to be greatly compromised
So a Diesel, dual T-cases, an automatic with at least 6 Forward Gears would increase mileage greatly. Please stop shaving the wrangler for weight savings and sticking by that pathetic 6 cyl gas guzzling engine .
    The 4.0 HO was king.
