The Catback Exhaust design has been around since the 1970s. Ever since vehicles started using Catalytic Converters. This type of exhaust system is basically just what the name implies. It's the part of an exhaust system that starts just rearward of the catalytic converter, and then continues to the end tailpipe. Since catalytic converters are required by law, you generally don't have to replace them often, if ever. Unlike the converters of the 70s and 80s, today's converters have more engineering involved, and flow much better than the older ones ever did. After the catalytic converter, you can almost do whatever you want to with your exhaust. Some states might have some specific laws (no pipes exiting before the front doors, or in front of the rear axle, etc), but you can change some things for the better.

Meaning, the driver doesn't want to hear it, and neither do your neighbors. Mufflers are meant to do that, and are designed a certain way inside to dampen any noise. It let's the engine breathe easier. The more air you can get through an engine will help horsepower and performance. The stock exhaust works ok for puttering around, but using a Catback Exhaust System with a larger diameter pipe is like getting easy horsepower. You don't really have to modify the car or the engine - just bolt it on in many cases. The next thing you know, you get a few more horses from your ride and more torque to play with. Some people mention "backpressure." Opening up an exhaust system can reduce back pressure, which can help horsepower. That's ok, as long as it doesn't go too far. Engineers develop engines to work with a certain amount of back pressure to make them function. Some engines, especially small ones (ie. 4-cylinders) can have drastic problems and issues if the back pressure drops down too far (this can also effect torque). The companies that make Catback Exhaust systems have engineers that have figured all this out ahead of time for you. They have very specific designs, so that you get the right back pressure for the maximum amount of performance. If performance is your goal, a Catback Exhaust System works great. Another great reason for replacing the stock muffler with a Catback Exhaust System is you get a more tuned muffler for the application. More specific to the vehicle and the engine combo. Mufflers come in all kinds of sizes and shapes. They all tend to sound different too. 4X4 lovers and performance drivers like to hear their engine. It helps give them a sense of what's going on engine wise, it let's them know how the engine is working. It doesn't have to be loud, that's a myth of sorts. You're not looking for loud, you're looking to hear that rumble, that thunder, that growl that speaks to you. Catback Exhaust Systems also have a lot of other positive attributes over a stock exhaust. They often use dual outlets which not only look great, but give you that "dual" stereo-type sound that you want to hear. The ends can be black, polished, or even chrome, so they can definitely upgrade your look.
