WHAT IS A SWAY BAR?

Unlike regular vehicles that are confined to busy highway roads or city streets, your Jeep Wrangler is designed to blast through the most rugged terrain and feed your passion for outdoor adventures. It is built to help every Jeeper find their way through anything nature has in store for them along their journey.

However, while you can count on your rig to scale most obstacles along the trail, it's never a bad idea to equip your Jeep with top aftermarket products that will enhance its safety, control its momentum, and boost overall performance on and off the trail.

Speaking of which, a Jeep sway bar will help regulate your rig's suspension movements as well as reduce its body roll while making a fast turning or cornering.

Driving on an uneven surface can be quite tricky. Even if you are an avid off-roader, you will still need all the help you can get to safely navigate through sharp corners and keep your vehicle from swaying.

As an important part of your Jeep's suspension, a Jeep sway bar connects the left and right wheels of your vehicle together and helps to reduce body roll when fast cornering and going over bumps and uneven terrain. Since the suspension is one of the most important systems on the Jeep, it usually gets more attention than even cosmetic accessories, mods, and gear.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SWAYBARS

What's so important about suspensions anyway?

The suspension is the part of the Jeep that makes you a hero or a zero when you hit the trails. While a stock suspension can get you to work daily, it cannot withstand the onslaught of harsh terrain elements for long. As an avid off-roader, anything you can do to make a Jeep handle better is a good thing, especially if it's been lifted. This is why suspension upgrades are usually the most prominent consideration for anyone looking to do some off-roading.

The sway bar, or as it's sometimes called, an "anti" sway bar, or a stabilizer bar, is meant to help minimize sway while driving your vehicle.

Sway bars don't really have any moving parts, though they can flex a small amount. Commonly made from steel, some are hollow, and some are solid. Their main function is to keep your truck or Jeep level when you make a turn. This becomes particularly handy when you're on the highway driving at highway speeds.

A sway bar is connected to your chassis' frame/suspension by two end-links. The name implies exactly where they are, on the ends of the sway bar, and they link the frame and suspension together.

A stock or everyday end link is typically nothing more than a rod with attachment holes for bolts at the end. The ends have a bushing, which is usually made from rubber. They can also be made using urethane.

Sway bars themselves will be on the front of your Jeep, the back of your Jeep, or even both. Some older model Jeeps may not have them at all. What is the purpose of a rear sway bar? The rear sway bar takes over when the front sway bar is done working or going into and out of a turn.

Now, for the off-roaders out there, you get a great option when it comes to sway bar end links. You can choose adjustable and quick-release options.

Once on the trail, you simply reach for the sway bar end link on your Jeep, release a pin, and safely disconnect it. The sway bar will still stay in place on your Jeep, as you are only disconnecting the end links.

Why do this?

By disconnecting the end links, you are allowing your suspension to have more travel and articulation, thus making it easier to trail over obstacles and get in and out of trail situations. You will probably be moving slowly to navigate your Jeep over the terrain, so not using the sway won't really mean anything at this point. More flex is best, right?

These better sway bar ends can also be adjustable. So no matter what kind of lift you have, you can get an end link that works best on your particular Jeep. The adjustment feature allows you to fine-tune the length of the end link.
