Oil: Sort of like the lifeblood of your Jeep; it performs the important task of keeping the moving parts in your engine lubricated to prevent overheating, damage, and warping. This engine oil degrades over time with regular use, which lessens its ability to protect your engine’s internal parts significantly, so it’s imperative to change this fluid on a regular basis.

Transmission fluid: Just like the motor oil keeps the engine lubricated, the transmission fluid does the same for…you guessed it, the transmission. The transmission fluid is in more of a closed system than the engine oil, which translates to it not needing to be changed very often at all. That said, be sure to check your owner’s manual for a periodic fluid changing schedule.

Coolant: Coolant, AKA antifreeze, AKA radiator fluid, is an essential part of the radiator system whose sole job is keeping your engine from overheating. If this fluid runs low you may notice your temperature gauge start to rise; if it progresses too far, you could be yet another steaming mess on the side of the road, or worse, the trail. This is an easy situation to avoid; simply twist off the radiator cap and check the fluid level every time you change your oil.

Brake fluid: Your brakes are a hydraulic system, meaning they rely on pressurized fluid in order to function properly. If this fluid is low, your braking ability diminishes. If this fluid is gone, your brakes are gone. It’s pretty important stuff. Check the fluid level in the master brake cylinder, usually located behind the engine on the driver’s side; if the fluid level is more than half an inch from the top of the cylinder, you should top it off.

Power steering fluid: This fluid works to keep your Jeep’s power steering system lubricated and pressurized for maximum efficiency and ease of movement. If you begin to notice a whining noise when you turn your steering wheel, chances are it’s because your power steering fluid is low.
