Will 3-Row Jeep Be the Yuntu Electric Concept or Wagoneer?

Patent drawings show that Jeep is working on a 3-row vehicle. Some suspect that it may be the widely popular Grand Wagoneer, while others believe that it may be the Yuntu Concept which was featured at the Shanghai Auto Show earlier this year. The Office for Harmonisation in Internal Market contains the patents which may make the 3-row vehicle a reality in the near future.

With the Dodge Durango positioned as 3-row SUV, it’s only natural that Jeep, being a sister brand under the FCA umbrella offer a similar option to compete with the likes of the Ford Explorer, which started having a third-row option as early as 1997, an idea which became standard in 2002, raiding the occupancy from 5 to 7 seats.

The Jeep Wagoneer, widely recognized as the world’s first luxury 4x4, has been rumored to return by Jeep lovers since its discontinuation in 1991. With discussions of reintroducing the Wagoneer in recent years, now is the perfect time to set it alongside the new JL an revised Compass.

The patent drawings, however, indicate that this will likely not be the Wagoneer, but the electric Yuntu offering for the Chinese market. Strange, considering that the Chinese market, while focused on the development of more electric-powered vehicles, is historically known to consume smaller vehicles a fraction of the size of the Yuntu concept.

If this does turn out to be the Wagoneer, we can’t help but feel the rising anxiety of thinking that it will be resurrected as an electric-only option. To boot, the updated body design doesn’t really do the original justice. In all likelihood, this three-row vehicle will be made only for the Chinese demographic, if it’s made at all.
