With Jeep expanding to the Indian market by mid 2016, the company is positioned to reach Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne's aggressive goal of selling 2 million vehicles by 2018.
Jeep Expanding Production Manufacturing into India
It's an aggressive expansion, but one that has to be done to get the Jeeps distributed to global customers. It's reported that Jeep will begin by selling the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, Jeep Grand Cherokees, and even the Grand Cherokee SRTs. Chrysler-Jeep has already expanded into other countries recently, including Brazil, China, and Italy. The company will be producing new Jeep vehicles in India, using a joint venture with Tata Motors. Jeep will be investing around $280 million to upgrade and modify Tata's manufacturing plant to make the Jeeps. So far, the FCA has not detailed what Jeep models they will be making at the plant. Chances are it won't be a Wrangler, since they've already announced they're expanding production in Toledo, Ohio, where they will continue to make the new Wrangler there, as well as
the new Wrangler Pickups. India has one of the largest populations on the planet, with over 1.3 billion people, so there should be plenty of opportunities for Jeep to meet their sales goals, if they can get the importing and manufacturing process up to speed. Production is slated to begin in 2017.
