If you're running the mighty YJ Jeep, you may have heard about changing your stock leaf spring suspension over to a Spring-Over Axle conversion. It's a popular mod since the YJs have leaf springs (instead of coils, like a TJ or JK). Many Jeepers consider the YJ the last "real" Jeep just because it uses leafs. Anyway, installing a Spring-over axle conversion can give you more ground clearance (for bigger tires, etc.), and quite a bit of lift for the little bit of cost involved. In some ways, you also get more access to different kinds of spring products you otherwise would have to pass because, well - YJ.
Recently, Synergy Manufacturing has developed spring perches to make the job easier while converting your YJ. The perches weld onto the axle housing. The parts themselves are laser cut, CNC formed from high strength 1/4" thick carbon steel. And of course, they're made right here in the USA. They are available 3 ways:
While the Synergy products are new, here at the Morris 4x4 Center, we carry Spring-Over Conversion parts in other brands for YJs as well. Some of the brackets as an alternative include:
While new spring perches eliminate you having to fabricate your own, they are only one part of a total conversion to a Spring Over Axle setup. Changing the height and suspension will alter the geometry radically, so you need to make sure you're prepared to upgrade other parts of your Jeep. Driveline angles are important (as with any lift modification). Some Jeep owners use a SYE (Slip Yoke Eliminator), and/or a CV (Constant Velocity driveshaft). The steering setup must work correctly too. So you may need parts like a drop pitman arm, or a special draglink. Maybe even different size shocks (if you're running the stock shocks). Longer brake hoses are a good idea sometimes as well. As with other custom builds, every Jeep is a little different, so the parts needed for a full conversion will differ from Jeep to Jeep. But the Synergy Jeep YJ Spring-Over axle Conversion Perches will save you a lot of time and hassle from fabricating your own. Have you ever done the conversion? Tell us in the comments!
