There’s always something to look forward to when it comes to Jeep. America’s favorite 4x4 is constantly in a process of development, with new models, technology and markets to keep track of. But as the company prepares to say goodbye to its current CEO, there are even more things to consider on the business side of the organization. Jeep Is Staying Put with FCA Nearing Marchionne’s Retirement
Over the past couple of years, Jeep’s future has been in limbo, as industry experts speculated the sale of FCA’s most profitable brand. Even Jeep CEO Sergio Marchionne entertained the idea at times when overall sales for the FCA were not looking so hot. Recently, Marchionne discussed the emergence of a new strategic plan to be ready August of this year, along with information regarding his successor. New US tax cuts saved approximately $1 billion for the brand, which prompted the production of the Ram pickup to move back to the US. Despite the $1 billion in savings and moving production, not all of Jeep’s employees are content, as Jeep is preparing to lay off 88 workers by the end of next month.
Jeep Union Workers Threaten to File Suit Over Layoffs
Members of Toledo, Ohio’s United Autoworkers Union is protesting the termination of drivers, mechanics, and dispatchers who work at the Toledo terminal on Hagman Road. The union contends that Jeep could have avoided the firings altogether. Jodi Tinson, the spokesperson for the FCA, stated that the company has been conducting discussion with the Union for two years, and is doing its best to find solutions for impacted workers.
The 2019 Jeep Cherokee Debuts at the Detroit Auto Show
This year, the midsize Jeep growing in popularity got a facelift and a third engine offering. In addition to the current 2.4-liter Tigershark and 3.2-liter 6-cylinder Pentastar, the Cherokee will come with a 2-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine with start/stop technology. It features 270 horsepower, and is possibly the very same which can be found in the JL Wrangler. Fear not, the Cherokee’s previously “squinty” eyes have been addressed, giving it a more traditional Jeep look. The rear end has also been updated with redesigned taillights and a hands-free liftgate. Stay tuned for more Jeep updates as the coming of the Cherokee and other models draw near.
